Serie A Team of the Week: Lukaku lays waste to Lazio
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Romelu Lukaku leads the Serie A Team of the Week following his excellent performance for Inter at home to Lazio.Antonio Conte's men secured a vital 3-1 home victory which allowed them to leapfrog Milan into top spot in the table and into pole position to claim the Scudetto.Lukaku (8.4) played a part in all three goals, initially scoring from the penalty spot before earning his second with a flashed right-footed snapshot past the goalkeeper from the edge of the box which was only given after VAR Intervened. His best moment of the match was arguably his assist, though, as he showed devastating pace, power, and determination to barge down the right wing, leaving Marco Parolo for dead before setting up Lautaro Martinez for a tap in.Lorenzo Insigne (7.4) and Domenico Berardi (7.9) join the big Belgian in the front three after scoring for Napoli and Sassuolo respectively. The Napoli man converted from the penalty spot as the Partenopei defeated Juventus 1-0.Another Sassuolo player features in our XI in Manuel Locatelli (7.6), who completed 88/96 attempted passes and had more touches of the ball than any other player in this round of fixtures with 125.Jordan Veretout (7.8) scored two goals from midfield as Roma beat Udinese 3-0 with relative comfort.Making up the midfield three is Fiorentina's Erick Pulgar (7.7), who won an impressive 11/15 duels, albeit in defeat against Sampdoria. One of the most surprising results of the weekend saw Spezia defeat league leaders Milan 2-0. Simone Bastoni (7.7) scored one of the goals and slots in at left-back.Gianluca Mancini (8.1) and veteran defender Kamil Glik (8.0) feature in the centre of our defence.Berat Djimsiti (7.8) had 108 touches of the ball and completed 83/94 attempted passes for Atalanta.Napoli understandably had to weather a storm of sorts against Juve, but had Alex Meret (8.2) in goal to rely on as he made six saves to earn his clean sheet bonus.Serie A TEAM OF THE WEEK .

Mendy or Kepa? Tuchel reveals who Chelsea’s No.1 is
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Thomas Tuchel has lifted the lid on his long-term plans for the Chelsea goalkeeping spot, having surprisingly started Kepa Arrizabalaga ahead of Edouard Mendy against Newcastle on Monday. It was the second time in succession that the former Athletic Club goalkeeper had featured – and it was also his second clean sheet. That does not mean that he has become the new first pick in Tuchel’s eyes, as he made abundantly clear after the match. When asked if Kepa would be his No.1 going forward in an interview with Sky Sports, he replied: “No, Edu will stay as our No.1. And this is clear. This was clear before the game and it stays like this.“I’m happy that Kepa continued with his second cleansheet in a row. It was the moment to let him to feel the rhythm and continue to build up his confidence. “It was clear before the game that we hoped for the very best performance and for a cleansheet.“Edu will be in goal from now on because he recovered physically and mentally and today he’s the No.1.”Kepa had caught the eye against Newcastle as he produced a succession of fine saves in the second half of the match, notably doing well to turn away a dangerous header from Joe Willock that had been heading for the bottom corner of his net.It meant that Kepa secured a 7.7 FC Rating, which was his highest since a 2-0 win over Liverpool back in March 2020.Nevertheless, summer signing Mendy is expected to be back in goal on Saturday, when the Blues travel to face Southampton in another Premier League match as they attempt to further secure their place in the top four. .

Why Ilkay Gundogan has become such a remarkable goal threat for Man City this season
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Manchester City took another step towards claiming this season’s Premier League title with a 3-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The result now means that Pep Guardiola’s side sit comfortably at the top of the English top flight, seven points above Manchester United with a game in hand. At the heart of City’s impressive performance was Ilkay Gundogan. Once again, the German midfielder dragged his team to victory by not only driving into the Spurs box to set up a penalty for the opening goal of the game, but he also bagged two more for himself. How much has Gundogan improved this season? The performance capped off a remarkable run of form that has seen Gundogan pick up no less than eight goals and two assists in City’s last nine games. A run of form that has not only shown what the German midfielder can do, but one that has also perfectly set up Guardiola’s side to claim this season’s league title. Indeed, Gundogan’s goal scoring has gone through the roof this season. Last season the midfielder averaged around 0.15 goals per 90 minutes, but this time around he’s averaging a remarkable 0.52 goals per 90. Not only is that a considerable improvement but it suggests that the 30-year-old talent is finding the back of the net over three times as often as he did last season. Why is he scoring more goals this season? There are a number of reasons behind Gundogan’s improved eye for goal but broadly speaking it seems as though the German international has simply become a far more direct attacking threat. As well as his rate of goals increasing, Gundogan has also seen his xG per game almost double from 0.18 to 0.34, as well as his shots per game rising from 1.42 to 1.76. Remarkably, not only has the midfielder improved the quantity of shots he’s taken but also the quality of them too. Gundogan has almost doubled the amount of shots he hits on target per game (up from 0.5 to 0.86) and has seen his xG per shot (i.e how accurate his shot is) go up from last season’s average of 0.14 to 0.22. The midfielder’s conscious decision to become a more direct goal threat can also be seen in the fact that he makes more successful dribbles per match, but his passing and all-round playmaking has taken a notable dip as a result. Last season Gundogan averaged 75 completed passes and 0.13 assists per match. This time around those numbers have fallen to 67 and 0.08 respectively. However, the trade-off seems to be working in his and his team’s favour, as Gundogan has spurred Man City on with his goalscoring and quickly become a leading contender for this season’s Premier League player of the year. .

Who is fouled more – Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Over the years Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have been compared by every attacking metric possible. From trophy hauls, to goals, to assists, their careers have been intrinsically linked since hitting the world stage in the noughties. When it comes to being fouled, though, Messi receives more rough treatment than Ronaldo, at least in most recent years. In the 2020/21 campaign in La Liga, Messi is fouled 2.8 times per game, while in Serie A Ronaldo is fouled just 1.4 times per game. One other statistic that needs to be looked at with this is how often the players dribble during a game, as this is usually what leads to fouls being committed by opposition players. In the Spanish top flight this season, Messi completes 4.5 dribbles per game while Ronaldo only completes 1.8, so we can hypothesise that the Argentine is directly involved in more fast-paced confrontations with opponents than Ronaldo, and so is more likely to be involved in a situation to actually be fouled. Messi v Ronaldo - FoulsMessiRonaldoMinutes played16721542Fouled P902.81.4Dribbles P904.51.8Duels Involved P9014.48.4Neither player is particularly close to being the most fouled player in their respective leagues, either.Nabil Fekir is the most fouled player in La Liga from players who have played 500 minutes or more with 3.6, while Josip Ilicic is the most fouled player in Serie A, earning 4.4 free-kicks per game. From the above table, we can also see that Messi is involved in a lot more duels than Ronaldo with 14.4 per game compared to 8.4 and so in every match he is involved more in situations where a foul could be possible. This could be attributed to Messi's tendency to come deep in his latter years to see more of the ball, while Ronaldo usually opts to stay away from build-up play for the most part to play as a penalty box striker. .

Liverpool need more from Sadio Mane in Premier League top four race
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Sadio Mane has hit a sudden downturn in form, and there is no surprise that has coincided with Liverpool’s recent struggles in the Premier League. The Reds’ No.10 has scored just once in his last seven outings in the league, and has in fact hit the net just three times after starting the season with four goals from four games. Liverpool have lost three league games on the bounce for the first time in the Jurgen Klopp era and have fallen well away from the title race, now well and truly in a fight to secure a top four position. Statistically, Mane’s drop off doesn’t really show. According to Instat, his xG90 is slightly up this season, 0.48 from 0.4, while dribbles P90 have jumped from 4.6 to six.Crucially, while his xG has improved, his end product is waning. Last season Mane averaged 0.55 goals P90, just over one every two games, but this season so far he is going at one every three fixtures, averaging 0.33 goals P90.That is his lowest goal scoring ratio since arriving in English football, and that is including his two seasons with Southampton, despite the fact that he is attempting more shots and registering more shots on target per 90 minutes than he ever has. Comparing that to his teammate Mohamed Salah, he is being vastly outperformed by the Egyptian – while Salah is slightly down on xG90 from last season, he is averaging 0.75 goals P90 and currently leads the golden boot race with 17 Premier League goals. There seems to be a great deal of frustration in Mane’s game at the moment, and it is easy to see why as he loses possession of the ball 16.4 times P90, is caught offside just about once every match and gets fouled 2.7 times P90 – his highest total in England and far greater than Salah’s 0.8.Things aren’t quite sticking for Liverpool, and indeed for Mane, who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the season and was injured little over a week ago, missing two games. The entire rhythm of Jurgen Klopp’s side has felt the effects of this season, particularly the full-backs and Andrew Robertson, who Mane has developed a brilliant partnership on the left-hand side, may well have something to do with it as well. Even defensively, in a team that doesn’t appear to be pressing at it has done in the past, Mane has increased his contributions in recoveries in the opposition half P90 and percentage of challenges won per match. The impending return of Diogo Jota should do some good in at least taking part of the burden off Mane’s shoulders, as well as those of the rest of the front three, which could be key in Liverpool achieving Champions League football for next season. Perhaps it is a combination of fatigue, bad luck and just a natural, slight recession after a relentless title-winning campaign. Mane is still a top class footballer capable of things not many others are, but he needs to start showing those things again to help his side pick their season back up. .

Changes hard to come by – How Liverpool could line up against Leipzig
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Liverpool face a hugely important clash on Tuesday night when their Champions League campaign restarts at the neutral venue of Puskas Arena in Budapest against RB Leipzig. The Reds have lost three consecutive Premier League games for the first time under Jurgen Klopp and continue to be ravaged by injuries. Fabinho is likely to miss out for this fixture and again for the Merseyside Derby at the weekend, meaning Jordan Henderson will be forced to play at centre-back for a seventh consecutive match. Liverpool: Squad, FC Ratings, Matches, Formations2020/21 Champions League: Matches, Team Stats, Player StatsAlongside him should be Ozan Kabak after his Reds debut ended in calamity against Leicester. Fellow January signing Ben Davies missed the trip to the King Power with a knock and will likely be absent again. Despite the most difficult week of his Liverpool career, Alisson will go again in goal and Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson should be called upon in the full back positions.Liverpool’s midfield options got harder to choose from again with James Milner limping off the pitch on Saturday. Georginio Wijnaldum has only failed to feature in one game across all competitions this season, starting all but four of his appearances including all 10 so far in 2021. But due to a lack of alternatives, the Dutchman will be forced into an 11th straight start, likely alongside Curtis Jones which would bring about a fifth start in the competition for the 20-year-old Scouser. The other midfield position is up for debate, with Xherdan Shaqiri a possibility to come in. The Swuss was excellent in his last start at West Ham, while Thiago was heavily criticised for his performance at Leicester. The front three will remain the same but is in much need of some form. Mohamed Salah has been carrying the load with seven goals in his last 10 appearances, while Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino have five combined in their last 10. With back-to-back title dreams appearing to be all but over, this looms as a season defining tie for Liverpool. Success in the Champions League seems to be the last thing the Reds can aim for, and could even be crucial for their qualification next season if league form continues to stutter. Messi to start against future club? – How Barcelona and PSG could line up
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Barcelona versus PSG currently means more than just on-field matters, but their round of 16 tie in the Champions League is certainly the pick of the bunch. Both sides come into the tie on the back of a topsy turvy first half of their domestic seasons and with eyes on the ultimate prize having both reached at least the semi-finals last season. Barca have demons to avenge in Europe after losing 8-2 to Bayern in their semi, while PSG will still be burning from final defeat to the German Champions in the Portuguese bubble. Coming into this clash, former Southampton managers Ronald Koeman and Mauricio Pochettino both have an extensive injury list that will force a reshuffle in their respective lineups. Barca are wounded at the back with Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto out for the long-term, while Ronald Araujo is likely to miss out again.Sergino Dest should come in at right-back alongside Oscar Mingueza and Clement Lenglet in the centre, with Jordi Alba on the left. PSG have only Juan Bernat out in defence, so should be able to field a strong back four of Alessandro Florenzio, Marquinhos, Presnel Kimpembe and Mitchel Bakker. Frenkie de Jong has been one of Barcelona’s best players this season and should take his place in midfield alongside Sergio Busquets and Pedri, who may be forced into the middle with a lack of alternative options. Pochettino will be sweating on the fitness of Marco Verratti for his midfield, with Ander Herrera and Idrissa Gueye in place if the Italian can’t get himself ready. Les Parisiens are heavily depleted by injuries to Neymar and Angel Di Maria, but both Julian Draxler and Moises Kean scored over the weekend and should earn another start alongside Kylian Mbappe and Mauro Icardi. For Barca, Messi and Antoine Griezmann have continued to grow in form, with 14 goals and nine assists between them in their last 10 matches respectively. Ousmane Dembele is likely to come back into the XI after spending most of the weekend’s 5-1 win over Alaves on the bench. All is set for the first leg at the Nou Camp ahead of a mouth-watering tie, and one that could define both clubs’ seasons as they chase as much silverware as possible. .

Inter 3-1 Lazio Player Ratings: Lukaku brilliance gives Nerazzurri huge win
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Inter took a massive step in the Serie A title race after Romelu Lukaku inspired them to a 3-1 home win over Lazio at San Siro. With Juventus and Milan dropping points the day prior, the onus was on Antonio Conte's side to win to move top of the table above their city rivals. And they duly delivered thanks to their Belgian forward. Inter 3-1 Lazio: Player Ratings, Match Stats, Player Stats✔️ GOOD PERFORMANCESergej Milinkovic-Savic: 7.1Despite Inter claiming the spoils here, Lazio can feel hard done by as they controlled the ball for long periods and had a harsh penalty given against them at 0-0. And Milinkovic-Savic did excellent things in the centre of the midfield, making over 70 passes at a 93% pass completion rate - the highest on the pitch. He won 2/2 tackles and made six ball recoveries as well. And it was his goal-bound free-kick that flicked off Gonzalo Escalante and flew into the net, giving Lazio the goal their play deserved, if not one that they could build on. ❌ BAD PERFORMANCEAchraf Hakimi: 5.8Within Antonio Conte's system there are games where Hakimi sees little of the ball in effective positions and this was one of those. The Moroccan wasn't able to impact the match in an offensive way, losing possession a hefty 18 times despite only having 43 touches of the ball throughout. He also won just 2/6 of his duels, as well as not putting a single cross into the area and having one touch inside the opposition box. A distinctly un-Hakimi like performance from the wing-back. ⭐ STAR MANRomelu Lukaku: 8.4This was one of those evenings where the dynamic Belgian was simply unplayable. After the harsh penalty award he stepped up to calmly open the scoring, slotting to the goalkeeper's left for a vital goal. And while the Lazio defence stopped expecting an offside, Lukaku played on and smashed his volley past Pepe Reina for 2-0. But he kept his best moment for the second half; with the match in the balance at 2-1, he left Marco Parolo for dust on the counterattack and slipped to his side to allow Lautaro Martinez the most straightforward task to roll into the net. Manchester City 3-0 Tottenham, Player Ratings: Classy Gundogan stars again
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Manchester City tightened their grip on first place in the Premier League with an easy 3-0 win over Tottenham at the Etihad Stadium.Rodri’s first-half penalty gave them the springboard to success, but Ilkay Gundogan secured it as his marvellous run continued with a double in the second period.Spurs had little answer, with a Harry Kane free kick off the inside of the post the closest they came to finding the net.Man City v Tottenham: Player Ratings, Match Stats, Player Stats✔️ GOOD PERFORMANCEEderson: 8.2Another clean sheet for the talented Brazilian, whose wrestle with Alisson for the title of the Premier League’s best goalkeeper swung in his favour on Saturday. Not only did he keep his sheet clean, he produced a wonderful assist for Gundogan to complete the scoring with a measured long through pass. Was not worked particularly hard, but was assured and confident in everything he did.❌ BAD PERFORMANCEHugo Lloris: 5.4The World Cup-winning goalkeeper is not currently in the flush of form and will be disappointed with his contribution to his side on Saturday. It is not often that a goalkeeper can be said to be at fault when a penalty finds the net, but Lloris will feel that he should have kept out Rodri’s mediocre kick, which he got a big hand to.He was then too readily beaten at his near post by Gundogan, although by the time the Germany international sealed the game, he had been left exposed by a feeble challenge from Davinson Sanchez.Made only one save from the four shots he faced.⭐ STAR MANIlkay Gundogan: 8.8Ilkay Gundogan is the form player in the Premier League and continued his remarkable spell in front of goal by finding the net twice. Although he was not used ass a makeshift forward on this occasion, he continued to find himself in advanced areas and scored first after fine wing play from Raheem Sterling. His second was not a typical goal scored by a Pep Guardiola side as he latched onto a long pass from Ederson, showed strength to get clear and finished with a cool head.He went off injured, which was the sole black mark on an otherwise excellent outing.Man City v Tottenham: Player Ratings, Match Stats, Player Stats .
